Match Analysis

Belgium is the 2nd ranked team according to FIFA and after a less than impressive 2-0 loss to Italy in their first Euro match they won their last two keeping clean sheets in both.

Hungary was the surprise winner of Group F even though they only had one win and two draws. In their last two matches they have scored four goals and conceded four as well.

Belgium has not had a knockout stage win in the European Championship since 1980. In the last five matches between these teams Belgium has four wins and a draw, but they have not faced each other since 2009.

Belgium is solid all around the pitch and they are especially strong in the midfield and on defense. In holding clean sheets in their last two matches they only allowed a total of five shots on targets in those matches.

The Belgium defense is anchored by Chelsea GK Thibaut Courtois and they will have their hands full facing an attacking Hungary squad that scored six goals in their three group matches including three in their last one.

MF Balázs Dzsudzsák found the net twice in the wild draw facing Portugal. However, Portugal has not played well in the midfield in this tournament while that is one of the strengths of the Belgium squad. The Hungarians will have to pounce on chances like they did in the match with Portugal where they were dominated in time of possession 65% to 35%.

Eden Hazard leads the Belgium midfield and he had the assist in the lone goal in the win over Sweden. The Hungarian defense really has to mark Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, who scored two goals in the 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in group play.
