The East’s Washington Capitals and the West’s Vegas Golden Knights take to the ice at T-Mobile Arena this Wednesday night for Game 2 of this season’s best-of-seven Stanley Cup Finals. Game time on NBC Sports Network is set for 8 p.m. with Vegas holding the early 1-0 series lead.

Washington at Vegas Game Overview

The Capitals had their chances to add another road win to their impressive playoff record away from home this season, but in the end, a 6-4 loss in Monday night’s Game 1 as +137 underdogs dropped them to 8-3 through 11 road games this postseason. The total went way OVER the closing 5.5-goal line after it had stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in Washington’s previous five games.

Washington opened up a 2-1 lead in the first period on Nicklas Backstrom’s fifth postseason goals, and the Capitals regained the lead early in the third period when Tom Wilson gave them a 4-3 edge with his fourth goal of the playoffs. Both Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov were credited with an assist on that goal as the team’s top two scorers during this postseason run. Goalie Braden Holtby pitched back-to-back shutouts against Tampa Bay to help the Capitals win the Eastern Conference title, but he was tagged for five goals on 33 shots in Game 1 of this series.

Vegas continues to prove why it was the best team in the West this season with its relentless style of play. It has won quite a few games this postseason with a stellar defensive effort, but it has also shown the ability to light things up at the other end of the ice to win games. The bottom line is a 13-3 record through 16 playoff games, including a 7-1 mark on its home ice. The total has gone OVER the closing line in five of the Golden Knights’ last six games at T-Mobile Arena.

Staying true to the way they scored goals in their first three series, it was a total team effort for the Golden Knights in Game 1 with five different players lighting the lamp. Center Tomas Nosek scored the game-winner midway through the third period, and he added an empty-net goal with three seconds left on the clock to give Vegas its sixth goal of the night. Marc-Andre Fleury did not have his best night between the pipes with four goals allowed on 28 shots, but he remains one of the main reasons Vegas is still playing hockey in late May.

Washington at Vegas Prediction 05/30/2018

I did not expect Game 1 to be a high-scoring affair given the way each team’s defense and starting goalie played in their previous series. The Capitals won the majority of their games on the road, and Vegas was almost unbeatable at home. Look for another tight battle at T-Mobile Arena this Wednesday night in Game 2 with the same basic result to give the Golden Knights the sweep at home and the early 2-0 edge in this championship series.
