New York was embarrassed at home 41-10 on Monday night by Indianapolis. San Francisco lost their team-record 11th-straight game last Sunday, 26-6 to Chicago.
Jets QB Bryce Petty will start for the rest of the season as the Ryan Fitzpatrick era is seemingly over in New York. The 49ers have allowed 26 TD passes to only 7 interceptions so Petty should be able to find WRs Brandon Marshall, Quincy Enunwa and rookie Robby Anderson open down the field. Another thing helping Petty in this matchup is the presence of RB Matt Forte. While he is averaging only 3.7 ypc, he faces the league’s worst run defense (169.3 ypg) and should find plenty of running room. If San Francisco has to play 8 in the box to stop the run, they will be vulnerable over the top in man coverage. Look for Petty to be able to make some plays to his wideouts off of play action. The 49ers have mustered only 20 sacks on the year so Petty should have time to make his progressions.
Niners’ QB Colin Kaepernick was historically bad last week and that isn’t an overstatement. He became the first QB in NFL history to be sacked 5 times while failing to throw for more than 5 yards. As a team, the 49ers finished with 6 net yards passing, easily a team-record low. Kaepernick had played decently before last week’s game but he has a fragile psyche and it’s a mystery how he will react to being benched last week. The Jets pass defense has been poor on the year but they face an offense that’s best WR is a former castoff of theirs, Jeremy Kerley. Like San Francisco, they have totaled only 20 sacks on the year but the 49ers have surrendered 11 more sacks than New York. RB Carlos Hyde is the one weapon this team has but the Jets’ run defense has remained strong by allowing a mere 3.5 ypc and 90.3 ypg. Look for them to focus on stopping Hyde and getting after Kaepernick in the passing game.
Public Money Consensus
In this week’s NFL matchup between San Francisco and New York it is unclear who will be the starting QB’s for this game so it appears that the public is completely split on this game. The over/under bettors believe that this game will definitively go under the posted total of 43.5 at over 90%.
