Point Spread: Patriots -9.5

The New England Patriots come to face the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. The Jets are getting points as a substantial dog, a role where they found some success the first time they played the Patriots this season. It was the first time the Jets had covered the spread against their division-rivals in a couple of years, as the Patriots have been their daddy in recent memory, straight-up especially, but even ATS. But maybe the Jets can be sufficiently gritty at home and hold down the fort a little bit. Let’s see what we can come up with for MNF.

The Letdown Factor

Maybe a 42-year old Brady is starting to feel the effects of a quick burst of 6 games, feeling a little achy after a little bit of contact the last few weeks. At 6-0, the division is already in the Pats’ hands, theirs to lose, and it’s just week seven. Now they have to pick up and go to Jersey, albeit not a draining road-trip. But they’re facing a team they already beat fairly quickly less than a month ago, and one could make a case for the stars lining up for a letdown. But not to say that angle has never worked when backing an opponent of the Patriots, it doesn’t manifest into actuality as much as you’d think. Even with a slew of reasons why they should phone it in, they seldom do. To bank on that could be a mistake.

Less Than a Month Ago

By the same token, the Jets did cover in the first game of the season, delivering as 20-point dogs at Foxborough, doing just enough in a 30-14 loss to deliver for their backers. Tom Brady had another of his innumerable 300-yard games, and it was pretty much a breeze for the Pats after they took a 30-0 lead, with the Jets getting the old backdoor cover. The Jets at least managed to keep it in the ballpark, and that was with Luke Falk at quarterback, getting nowhere with the Pats’ defense, with 7 of their 14 points coming on a fumble recovery. Now with their starting quarterback, can the Jets hang in there a little bit at MetLife Stadium?

Jets Not Always Easy to Back

The Jets looked a bit reborn in the win over Dallas. After all, the Cowboys really needed a win and were outplayed most of the game. The acquisition of Le’Veon Bell hasn’t resulted in anything significant yet. Sam Darnold sure looked good in his return. The aerial package of Bell, Robbie Anderson, Jamison Crowder, and Demaryius Thomas has been ho-hum, and they’ve had a lot of trouble running the ball. They’re now taking that against one of the best defenses in football. The Patriots’ stoutness against both the run and the pass figures to knot up a Jets’ offense that was pretty flat last time. With the Jets also being a mistake-prone offense, it feeds right into the hands of the Patriots’ defense. In the previous game, the shoddy New York offensive line couldn’t contain a fierce New England pass-rush, either. With the New England defense in top form across all areas, what can really be expected out of the Jets’ offense this Monday?

Looking for a Crease to Success for the Jets

You would figure quarterback issues are at the root of the Jets having shown such a flat offense, for the most part, this season—ranked toward the bottom of the league somehow in both the run and the pass. Getting Darnold back in there and acclimated to the action again last week should help this offense get on the right track. We saw clear signs of that on Sunday, with Darnold going for 338 yards passing on 23-for-32 completions. The receiver crew came to life, with Thomas, Anderson, and Crowder all having good days. And they do have some chops on defense, even if it didn’t show much in the first game. Even with the offense stringing them out more often than not, they can be pretty stout up-front and have been effective against the run this season. At home, in the right spots, they can be pretty decent. They could be getting difference-making linebacker CJ Mosley back this week, as well.

Patriots at Jets Prediction 10/21/19

I just sense a little grit this week from the Jets, with some things shaking out for them to help them make a run at this cover. I think last week put them in a decent headspace. Getting some people back helps, as does a defense that can be scrappy in the right situations, at home is one of them. They’re nice and dug in at home now. It doesn’t help the Pats to have a super banged-up receiver crew, either. I do anticipate a little dreariness from New England this week, not enough perhaps to cause them to lose this game, but sufficiently enough to allow the Jets to squeak out a cover on MNF.
