Kansas City got another big win last week, a 27-20 victory over Philadelphia. Los Angeles failed to convert a last-second FG for the second-straight week in a 19-17 loss to Miami last Sunday.
Kansas City’s offense is doing it through the air and on the ground in 2017. QB Alex Smith has been great in the first 2 games, compiling a passer rating of 134.1, throwing 5 TDs, no picks and he is also the team’s second-leading rusher. TE Travis Kelce and WR Tyreek Hill are both playmakers and rookie RB Kareem Hunt has caught 8 passes for 126 yards and 2 scores. LA’s pass defense could be without CB Jason Verrett (knee, check status) so look for Smith to continue his recent trend of looking downfield more than once a game like the old Smith did. Hunt has given the ground game juice and is averaging 7.6 ypc on 30 attempts. He has also scored 3 TDs on the ground. The Chargers gave up 122 rushing yards to RB Jay Ajayi last week and they can expect to see a lot of Hunt in this one.
Los Angeles’ offense has a 2-1 differential in pass attempts to rushing attempts and those numbers usually don’t add up to victories. QB Philip Rivers has thrown for 523 yards, 4 scores and has a passer rating of 106.4. He has also thrown only 1 interception but has zero wins to show for it (not his fault, he can’t kick FGs). The Chiefs have given up some pass yardage on the year but only 2 TD passes and they have amassed 9 sacks. I see them getting after Rivers and forcing him into a miscue or two. RB Melvin Gordon has found tough sledding this season as he has gained only 67 yards on 27 carries (2.5 ypc). Kansas City’s run defense hasn’t been good but the Chargers tend to abandon the run earlier than most teams. Still, I expect to see the Chiefs key on Gordon early and force LA to become the one-dimensional offense they usually are.
