Two weeks into this NFL season and the Detroit Lions are undefeated. They’re not perfect, and they haven’t looked all that great, but they haven’t lost yet, heading into a Week 3 bout with the Eagles in Philadelphia. The Lions are getting a touchdown here, against an Eagles outfit that hasn’t covered a spread yet this year. Who do we like for our free NFL pick?
NFL Betting Odds
Week 3’s NFL betting odds opened Philly at -7 over Detroit, with an over/under of right around 49. Early betting action then dipped the Eagles to -6.5 and that total to 47.
Lions vs. Eagles Set-Up
Detroit comes in at 1-1 on the season, after upsetting the Chargers at home last week 13-10. The Lions spotted Los Angeles the first touchdown of the game and trailed 10-6 through three quarters. But they took the lead on a Matt Stafford-Kenny Golladay touchdown connection midway through the fourth and held on from there for the outright victory as one-point home dogs.
On the day Detroit got out-gained by the Chargers 424-339, out-rushed 137-94, missed an extra point and a field goal and turned the ball over twice in LA territory. But the Lions also benefited from several Chargers mistakes, including a lost fumble at the Detroit 1-yard line, two touchdowns negated by a penalty, two missed field goals and a crucial, late Philip Rivers interception.
Detroit opened its season with a 27-27 tie, out in Arizona. The Lions led that game 24-6 early in the fourth quarter but let the Cardinals rally and almost lost it, before settling for a sister-kisser.

Philly, meanwhile, sits at 1-1 this season, after falling at Atlanta Sunday night 24-20. The Eagles trailed the Falcons 17-6 early in the fourth quarter, rallied to take a 20-17 lead with three minutes left but gave up a long Julio Jones catch-and-run touchdown on a fourth down to fall again. Philadelphia then drove last-gasp inside the Atlanta red zone but came up short on a fourth-down of its own.
On the night the Eagles got out-gained by the Falcons 367-286, managed just 49 yards on the ground, and while they held a 33/27 advantage in time of possession they also turned the ball over three times.
Philadelphia opened its season with a 32-27 win over Washington. The Eagles fell behind to the Redskins 17-0 in the second quarter but used a 32-3 run spanning the halves to take control. Unfortunately for its financial backers Philly gave up a Washington score with just six seconds left on the clock and missed on the cover as a 10-point favorite.
Detroit actually leads the recent series with Philadelphia, winning three of four meetings from 2012-16. But 2016 already seems like a long time ago, especially when it comes to the Eagles.
On the injury front Philadelphia is banged up on offense; wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson and running back Corey Clement are all either out or very questionable for this game.
