Monday night’s matchup on ESPN in an 8:15 p.m. (ET) kickoff on the West Coast is an AFC West clash between the 6-8 Denver Broncos and the 3-11 Oakland Raiders.
Denver at Oakland Game Overview
Denver was able to work itself into position for one of the two wild-card playoff spots in the AFC, but back-to-back losses to San Francisco on the road and Cleveland at home as a slight favorite in each contest ended that dream. Before those two losses, the Broncos posted a 6-1 mark against the spread in their previous seven games. They are 4-3 ATS on the road this season, but just 2-5-1 ATS in eight games closing as favorites. The total has stayed UNDER in their last seven games.
The Broncos’ defense has not given up more than 22 points in any of its last six games as part of an overall points-allowed average of 21.4 points per game. The main reason Denver went 3-3 SU in those six games was the inability of its offense to score. With Case Keenum at the helm at quarterback, this side of the ball has averaged 21.9 PPG. That average has dropped to 19.7 points over those last six games.
With high expectations surrounding the return of Jon Gruden as the Raiders’ head coach, this team has been a train wreck since Week 1. With a total of three SU wins scattered among 11 losses, Oakland is more concerned with the upcoming NFL draft than its final two games. It did show some heart covering against Kansas City as a 14-point home underdog ahead of a stunning 24-21 upset against Pittsburgh in Week 14 as a 10-point underdog at home. Unfortunately for Raiders’ fans, it was business as usual in last Sunday’s 30-16 road loss to Cincinnati as three-point underdogs.
It is hard to find a bright spot on a team that has played rather dismal in every phase of the game. You would have to think that nobody’s job is safe with quarterback Derek Carr at the top of that list. His inconsistencies throwing the ball coupled with a running game averaging 99.1 yards per game, it is easy to see why Oakland is well down the list in scoring with an average of 18.6 PPG. The defense has not helped the cause with a points-allowed average of 29.9.
