The 4-7 Carolina Panthers’ rapidly fading postseason plans will be further pushed to the test this Sunday night in a road game against the 7-3-1 Seattle Seahawks . Game time from CenturyLink Stadium is set for 8:30 p.m. (ET) and this conference clash will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
Carolina at Seattle Game Overview
Carolina’s nightmare of a season at 4-7 straight-up with a costly 3-6-2 record against the spread has been a far cry from last year’s run to Super Bowl 50. There appears to be no cure for this hangover that could linger right into the New Year. The Panthers did manage to cover last week as 3.5-point road underdogs in a 35-32 loss to Oakland, but it is still just 1-3-1 ATS on the road this year. The total went OVER the 48-point closing line in that game after staying UNDER in their previous three outings.
Despite the fact that Carolina was able to put up 32 points last week, Cam Newton continues to struggle in the passing game. He threw for 246 yards and two scores against the Raiders, but he only connected on 48 percent of his 29 attempts for a quarterback rating of just 53.8. The Panthers did get a better effort on the ground with 129 rushing yards on 25 attempts, but things are going to get much tougher this week against a much better defense.
The Seahawks have to be scratching their heads following last Sunday’s 14-5 loss to Tampa Bay as five-point road favorites. The loss dropped them to 7-3-1 SU with an even 5-5-1 record ATS, but they still have a comfortable three-game lead in the NFC West. The total stayed way UNDER the 46-point line in that loss and it has stayed UNDER in four of the last six games. Heading into this game Seattle is an even 2-2-1 ATS this season at home.
The offense appeared to be back on track in Seattle’s recent three-game winning streak in which it averaged 29.3 points, but that all came to a grinding halt its last time out. Russell Wilson ended last Sunday’s game with just 151 yards passing while completing 51.5 percent of his 33 passing attempts. He was the driving force in a running game that is ranked 27th in the NFL with 80 yards rushing on eight carries. The Seahawks’ strength still lies in a defense that is first in the league in points allowed (17.0).
