With five quarterbacks coming off the board in the opening round of this year’s NFL Draft, there is widespread speculation over the impact each player will have for their new team in the 2021 regular season.
Online sportsbooks such as BetOnline have released an extended list of betting props covering all five players. At the top of the list is former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence as the first overall pick of the 2021 draft. He is expected to be the Jacksonville Jaguars starter from Week 1.
Trevor Lawrence Props
The betting odds that Lawrence throws for more than 4050 yards are set at +110. The odds favor the UNDER for this prop at -150 odds. As far as total touchdown throws, that number has been set at 27 with -130 odds for the UNDER. The betting odds he throws for more than 27 touchdowns are set at -110.
The best value on the board when it comes to Trevor Lawrence props could be the OVER on interceptions and rushing yards.
The prop for total interceptions is set at 12 ½ with -130 odds for the OVER. They drop to -110 for the UNDER play in this prop.
New Jacksonville head coach Urban Myer did not draft Lawrence first overall to hand the ball off. The more he gets to show off his talents throwing the ball, the more it will end up in the hands of a defensive player. That is the case with just about every rookie quarterback. That should also add up to at least 13 INTs by the end of the regular season.
I also like the OVER on 325 total rushing yards. The odds are set at -120 for betting either side of this prop. Another trait of a very mobile rookie quarterback is to take off with the ball as the pocket collapses or his primary receivers are covered downfield.
Other Rookie Quarterback Props
The Chicago Bears have turned to former Ohio State standout Justin Fields as their quarterback of the future. To fill an immediate need at that position, they also signed veteran Andy Dalton as a free agent from Dallas.
The prop bet odds that Fields is the starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams heavily favor NO at -425 odds. With Dalton on the roster, head coach Matt Nagy has the luxury of working Fields into the starting role later in the season. Yet, I would still be tempted by the +250 odds for betting YES.
Mac Jones was the first-round choice of the New England Patriots, with veteran Cam Newton set as the incumbent starter at quarterback. The prop bet odds Jones gets the start in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins heavily favor NO at -450 odds.
The odds Jones does get elevated to the starting role for the team’s season opener are set at +275. As unpredictable as Bill Belichick can be as the long-time head coach of New England, I would stay away from this prop.
Trey Lance was the third overall pick of the recent draft. The former North Dakota State quarterback was selected by the San Francisco 49ers. The prop bet odds that Lance is the team’s starting quarterback before San Francisco’s bye in Week 6 are set at -350 for NO and +225 for YES.
This is another rookie that will most likely spend some extended time on the bench this season. However, a small play of those favorable +225 odds is a tempting option given the pressure head coach Kyle Shanahan will be under to work him into the starting lineup.
