The Clemson Tigers ride a 16-game winning streak into a rematch of a pretty good game from last year with Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at Death Valley East. Aggies vs. Tigers Set-Up
Texas A&M opened its 2019 campaign with a 41-7 win over Texas State last Thursday. The Aggies scored touchdowns on four of their first six possessions of the game, led 28-0 at the half and 41-0 late. Unfortunately for their financial backers A&M gave up a Bobcats touchdown with 36 seconds left and finished with a push of the spread as a 34-point favorite.
The Aggies out-gained Texas State 478-219, out-rushed the Bobcats 246-8, held a 36/24 time of possession advantage and won the turnover battle 4-1.
Clemson, meanwhile, opened defense of its national championship of last season with a 52-14 drubbing of Georgia Tech last Thursday. The Tigers struggled a bit early, turning the ball over on two of their first three possessions of the game, but led 28-0 at the half and 35-0 before allowing the Yellowjackets to hit the board in the third quarter. Later, much to the delight of its financial backers, favored Clemson kicked a 51-yard field goal with six minutes left to cover a 36-point spread.
The Tigers out-gained Georgia Tech 632-294 and out-rushed the Ramblin’ Wreck 411-157. However, they also committed three turnovers, two on Trevor Lawrence interceptions.
These teams met for a pretty good game last season, a 28-26 Clemson victory at College Station. The Tigers led that game 28-13 through three quarters, but the Aggies scored twice, the second time with just 46 seconds left, to pull within two points. A&M came up empty on a 2-point conversion that would have tied the game, but the late rally gave it a back-door cover as a 12-point underdog.
The Aggies actually out-gained Clemson that day 501-413, ending up as the only team to do so last season.
