North Texas Mean Green at Liberty Flames Overview
Liberty Flames
The Flames made their debut on the FBS circuit with style. As a five-point underdog, Liberty smacked visiting Old Dominion by a score of 52-10. Liberty’s skipper Turner Gill has consistently propelled this program forward, most notably from its point of ignition in 2017 where it defeated Baylor on the road in one of the greatest at-the-spread upsets in college football history. Liberty would follow up their opening win with a 38-14 defeat at Army.
North Texas Mean Green
The Mean Green come into this contest undefeated, coming in off one of the most impressive results in Week 3 with a 44-17 beatdown of Arkansas in the Hog’s own stead. The highlight of this affair was the Mean Green orchestrating a fake fair catch for a punt return touchdown in what was one of the most scintillating “gadget plays” in recent history. North Texas also owns another dominant win against cross-state adversary SMU to start off the season when they defeated the Mustangs 46-23 covering a 3.5-point line. The stock on UNT is through the ceiling.
Reasons To Back Liberty
Liberty once again finds itself in a scenario where it can come in off the radar and wreak havoc. Against Army, many were expecting a repeat performance by the Flames after they pulled off the drubbing of Old Dominion. Once they were defeated handily in West Point, all eyes have fallen off Liberty. The Flames have had two weeks to prepare for this game and once again are set up to creep up on a likely overvalued counterpart.
Reasons To Avoid North Texas
Given the caliber of North Texas’ result last week, this contest is prime for an overreaction. So far, we have seen just that as 85% of the consensus have liked this team in this spot in some forums. Liberty is a far weaker team on paper compared to Arkansas, so a widespread assumption is that UNT should defeat the Flames by even more than the Hogs given the difference in quality. Such a presumption is hyperbolic nonetheless.
