The Appalachian State Mountaineers (9-2) will host Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (7-5) at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina for the inaugural Sun Belt Conference Championship. The contest will take place on Saturday, December 1st, 2018 at 12:00 PM ET. The game will be televised on ESPN. App State and ULL met earlier this year in Boone on October 20th when the Mountaineers had a tough time putting the Ragin’ Cajuns away. The Mountaineers were favored by 24.5 points, but they only defeated Louisiana-Lafayette by a score of 27-17.
Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns at Appalachian State Mountaineers Overview
Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns
The Ragin’ Cajuns come into this contest on the heels of a momentous “Battle of the Bayou” victory that saw ULL edge out their arch-rivals UL-Monroe by virtue of a missed field goal in the closing stages of regulation to punch their ticket to the Sun Belt’s big dance. The Group A Champions enter on a three-game winning streak after earning the 31-28 win in Monroe, last Saturday.
Appalachian State Mountaineers
The Mountaineers also enter in on a winning streak that extends four games with their most recent victory over Sun Belt power Troy, last Saturday. The Mountaineers failed to cover a 12-point line when they defeated the Trojans 21-10. Previous to this, App State had covered successfully in three consecutive games as heavy chalk (-13.5, -18.5, and -27.5 respectively).
Reasons to Avoid Appalachian State
The Mountaineers have developed a pedigree for being one of the blue bloods of the mid-majors. As a result, in conference championship scenarios such as these, you can expect to pay a premium to back them and furthermore expect the public to be all over them and set up takers for an overlay. So far, we have seen 91% of the cash and 100% of the consensus picks come in on App State, and if what happened in the Notre Dame/USC game serves as any barometer of what can happen when we see such data, the Mountaineers are laying a more significant number than they should be.
Reasons to Back Louisiana-Lafayette
The Ragin’ Cajuns will show no timidity against Appalachian State. After all, they played with this very team on its own soil just over a month ago before going 4-1 SU down the backstretch and getting a shot of lightning. The Cajuns also will enter this game with everything to gain and nothing to lose mentality which makes them a dangerous team to go against. On the contrary, Appalachian State has far more to lose with an outside chance of a New Year’s Six bowl bid should UCF and Boise State lose this weekend and may be caught up in that moment more than focusing solely on their opponent.
