It’s opening week for the 2019-20 College Football season, and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will welcome the Eastern Michigan Eagles to the renowned “Surf Turf” of Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina when the MAC locks horns with the Sun Belt. EMU Eagles at Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Overview

We covered this extensively in our write-up of the 2019-20 MAC Futures, but Eastern Michigan once again found itself on the wrong side of the bounces in the 2018-2019 season. EMU went 7-6 in their previous campaign but lost five of those six defeats by a touchdown or less, two of which required overtime. Coach Chris Creighton will be back at the helm again for his sixth year in Ypsilanti and brings with him just eight returning starters. Yet, there is no question EMU is a program on the rise as they find themselves as a road favorite now for their third consecutive away game dating back to 2018.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
The Chanticleers come into the 2019-2020 season off of a losing campaign in its 2018-19 edition. Coastal Carolina finished 5-7 but even a more disconcerting 2-6 in conference play. This is a unit that returns just one starter in its defensive backfield and leaves many questions raised concerning their defense, despite cultivating a rather ominous reputation last season, finishing 100th in scoring (33.2 ppg) and 110th in the FBS in total defense (450.8 ypg).
Reasons To Avoid Eastern Michigan Eagles
Situational match-ups are of key thing we like to focus on. Eastern Michigan for all intent and purposes was very one-dimensional in 2018 in terms of defensive play as they were the third-best in the FBS in passing yards per game (150.2 ypg) while surrendering a 102nd-ranked 203.5 rushing yards per game. For Coastal Carolina, they were one of the worst passing teams in the FBS averaging a 106th-ranked 180.7 passing yards per contest. However, running the ball, CC was excellent as they averaged 198.7 rushing yards per game (41st nationally). Should both teams lean on their tendencies here, Coastal Carolina will implement a steady dose of the run to protect its defense from playing too many innings against Eastern Michigan’s otherwise lackluster offense and could keep this game easily within reach. This game is not a good situation to be in spotting road points.
Reasons To Back Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
The Chants’ goal is to make a bowl game in 2019. To do so, they will have to take care of business in winnable games to put themselves in a position to be in that equation. Upon looking at CC’s docket for the upcoming season, they bode manageable home contests against Norfolk State, Georgia State, Texas State, and away games at both UMass and Kansas. These five games are certainly the ones that Coastal Carolina expect to have a chance to get a win in. CC will need six W’s to become eligible for a bowl game, and this game could retrospectively be the one that puts them over should they take care of business in the other five fixtures. Coastal Carolina’s sense of urgency combined with the hope renewed of a new season will make them a viable option in this spot. Adding in home cooking behind them gives them a chance to be a true live dog on opening weekend.
