The Aggies ride a five-game winning streak into Tuesday night after beating Arkansas Saturday 69-61. Texas A&M, favored at -7.5, fell down 8-0 out of the gate. But later, with the game tied at 50-50, the Aggies went on a 9-0 run to take control, on their way toward the victory and the cover.
Texas A&M won the turnover battle 17-10.
Saturday was the 12th straight game the Aggies shot less than 50 percent from the floor. However, it was also the 10th straight game they held their opponents under 50 percent shooting.
Stretching back into mid-January A&M is 7-1 SU, 4-3-1 ATS over its last eight games. And the only loss during that span came by one point at Texas, a game the Aggies led by 22 at one point. So they really should own an eight-game winning streak.
At 9-3 in conference play Texas A&M is tied with Florida for third place in the SEC. And a top-four finish earns one a double-bye in the upcoming SEC tournament. Also, at 20-5 overall the Aggies are right in the running for a top-2 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Meanwhile the Bulldogs are 2-1 both SU and ATS their last three times out after winning at No. 18 Ole Miss Saturday 81-71. Mississippi State, catching +3, trailed by eight early but rallied to lead 40-33 at the half. The Bulldogs then went on a 27-15 run to begin the second half and eased home from there.
MSU held the Rebels to just 38 percent FG shooting and out-rebounded the Rebs 48-36.
Two games ago the Bulldogs lost at home to Florida 81-68. Three games ago they won at Georgia 76-75. But going back a bit further Mississippi State is only 4-6 SU, 2-8 ATS over its last 10 games.
At 6-6 in conference play the Bulldogs are tied for eighth place in the SEC, three games and three teams out of fourth place. So MSU might be out of the running for a double-bye in the SEC tournament. But a top-eight finish would earn them a single bye. And at 18-7 overall the Bulldogs, barring a complete collapse, are probably headed for an 8 or 9 seed for the Big Dance.
By the Numbers
Texas A&M is shooting 43 percent from the field this season, 31 percent from 3-point range and 68 percent from the free-throw line. So the Aggies ain’t exactly great at throwing the ball in the hole. But A&M is also holding opponents to just under 40 percent FG shooting and out-rebounding foes by 37-28 per game. This while playing what ESPN ranks as the 7th-toughest schedule in the nation.
Mississippi State is shooting 46/32/68 across the boards while holding opponents to 43 percent FG shooting and winning the battle on the boards 36-32. This while playing ESPN’s No. 24 schedule.
