Los Angeles Lakers at New Orleans Pelicans NBA Pick – Odds Analysis

By David Schwab

This Wednesday night at Smoothie King Center in the Big Easy, the New Orleans Pelicans welcome the Los Angeles Lakers to town in their last matchup before the start of this season’s NBA All-Star break on Friday. Game time from New Orleans is set for 8 p.m.

Los Angeles at New Orleans Game Overview

The Lakers’ recent four-game winning streak both straight-up and against the spread came to an end against Dallas on the road last Saturday in a 130-123 setback as three-point underdogs. They are 9-18 SU on the road this season with a 13-14 record ATS. This was the first time in their last five contests that the total went OVER the closing line. Los Angeles is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games closing as an underdog and the total has gone OVER in three of its last five road games.

Julius Randle scored a game-high 26 points in Saturday’s losing cause and newly acquired point guard Isaiah Thomas added 22 points off the bench. The Lakers did shoot 54.8 percent from the floor against the Mavericks, but a porous defense had no answer for Dallas as the 26th-ranked scoring team in the NBA. Los Angeles is ranked 11th in the league in scoring with an average of 107.0 points per game, but it falls to 25th when it comes to points allowed (109.5). The Lakers did not give up more than 104 points a game in that recent winning streak.

New Orleans is coming off back-to-back road wins against Brooklyn as a favorite and Detroit as an underdog as part of a shaky 3-5 mark both SU and ATS over its last eight games. The total stayed UNDER 221.5 points in Monday’s loss to the Pistons after going OVER in four of its previous six games. The Pelicans return home for Wednesday night with a three-game losing streak (SU and ATS) at Smoothie Kink Center as part of an overall record of 14-12 SU (10-15-1 ATS) at home this season.

Anthony Davis led all scorers against Detroit with 38 points while going 14-for-24 from the field. He also pulled down 10 rebounds as part of his third double-double in his last four starts. He put up 44 points in Saturday’s win against Brooklyn and he has now exceeded his team-high 27.1-point scoring average for the third time in his last five games. New Orleans is fourth in the NBA in scoring with an average of 110.8 PPG, but it falls to 29th in points allowed (111.1)
