Veteran Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer turned the clock back a few years with his victory at Michigan on June 10. Kevin Harvick finished second in that race as a +350 favorite to win, and Kurt Busch outdueled his brother Kyle to round out the top three. Joey Logano was my top-valued pick at +1650 odds to win, but he faded to seventh in the final finishing order.
The following is a look at a trio of the top favorites to win Sunday’s road race at Sonoma along with my top-valued pick to win at longer odds as provided by 5Dimes
Toyota Save Mart 350 Race Favorites
Kevin Harvick +400
Whether he is racing around an oval or on a road course, it is going to be hard to find a Cup Series race this season where Harvick is not one of the favorites to win. He came very close to posting his six victory of the season two weeks ago at Michigan, and there is no reason to think that he will not win on Sunday. The No. 4 Ford racing team is second in the Cup Series standings with 589 total points. It has placed inside the Top 5 in 11 of the first 15 point races. Harvick only won twice last season, but one of those victories was at Sonoma.
Kyle Busch +400
Busch is a close second to Harvick when it comes to dominating the Cup Series this season with four checkered flags of his own. His No. 18 Toyota is at the top of the standings with a total of 664 points, and it has finished in the Top 5 in 10 of the first 15 events. Even more impressive is the fact that Busch has led 20 percent of the 4,459 laps he has run this season. He has two career victories at Sonoma with the last one coming in 2015, and he is coming off a fifth-place finish in last year’s race.
Martin Truex Jr. +400
The defending Cup Series Champion has done his best to keep pace with Harvick and Busch this season in defense of the 2017 racing title. He has two victories and a total of nine runs inside the top five to hold down sixth place in the current standings with 506 total points. A few weeks back the No. 78 Toyota won at Pocono before fading to 18th at Michigan. Last year’s road race at Sonoma was forgettable with engine issues dropping Truex to No. 37. However, he won this race in 2013, and he finished fifth in the 2016 season.
