Joey Logano got things started last Sunday in this season’s Sprint Cup schedule with a thrilling victory in the Daytona 500. The 2014 Sprint Cup Champion Kevin Harvick finished second and the defending champion in this year’s Great American Race, Dale Earnhardt Jr. ended-up third.
The following is a look at a few of the top favorites to win this Sunday’s race along with my top value pick of the week based on odds from Sportsbook.ag.
There is a pair of co-favorites to win this race at +600 betting odds starting with Jeff Gordon. You get the feeling that the long-time veteran is going to be at the top of the betting odds’ list for quite a few races this season given that this will be his final go-round in the Sprint Cup series after more than two decades of racing. The No. 24 car started last week’s race from the pole position but it fell all the way to 33rd in the final race results after a long day on the track. Gordon’s recent performance at Atlanta includes a trip to Victory Lane in 2011 and a second-place run in 2012 to add some value to these odds.
The other favorite at +600 is Kevin Harvick. The defending champ came dangerously close to winning last week so there is some tremendous value in these odds. The No. 4 car appears to have picked-up where it left off last season and if you go back over this team’s five victories in the run to a title, one of them was in the second point-race of the season at Phoenix. As far as Harvick’s recent record at Atlanta, while it may not include any wins, he has posted six top-10 finishes in his last eight Sprint Cup races at this track.
One of two third-favorites at +700 betting odds is Jimmie Johnson. There is hardly a Spring Cup race on the schedule where his name would not be included on this list. This past Sunday, the No. 48 car made its presence felt with a fifth-place finish after leading the Daytona 500 for a total of 39 laps, which was the most of any team on the day. Johnson ended-up fourth in last season’s Sprint Cup race at Atlanta and, over the course of his career, he has posted three point-race victories at this track along with three top-five finishes in his last five runs here.
