This Saturday night’s exhibition Sprint All-Star Race kicks-off two weeks of NASCAR racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway in advance of the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day Weekend. Last Sunday at Dover, Matt Kenseth made his way to the Winner’s Circle for the first time this season with two of NASCAR’s up and coming stars Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott rounding-out the Top 3. The following is a look at a few of the top favorites to win the 2016 All-Star Race along with my top value pick based on odds provided by TopBet.
There is a trio of +700 favorites to win Saturday’s night’s race starting with Kevin Harvick. Current form for the driver of the No. 4 Chevrolet remains pretty good with a Top 5 finish in five of the first 12 point-race events including a victory earlier in the year at Phoenix, but he has been hit or miss lately with two 15th-place finishes wrapped around a second-place run at Kansas in his past three events. As far as his recent performance in this race, Harvick finished second the last two seasons, but you would have to go back to the 2007 season to find the last time he won.
The second driver at the top of the list is Jimmie Johnson. Much like Harvick, the driver of the No. 48 Chevy has had his high points so far with victories at Atlanta and Fontana as part of five finishes in the top five, but he has also struggled at times with an additional six finishes outside the Top 10. With last week’s disappointing 25th-place run at Dover, he has been outside the top 20 drivers in three of his last five Sprint Cup events. As far as Johnson’s chances to win this event there is some value in his odds with three prior victories including back-to-back All-Star titles in 2012 and 2013.
Rounding-out the top three favorites at +700 odds to win is Kyle Busch. He is one of four drivers with multiple checkered flags through the first 12 races with victories at Martinsville and Texas in consecutive weeks followed by a win at Kansas a few weeks ago. He has been the most consistent driver this season with nine finishes in the Top 5 and the 2015 defending champion is sitting in second place in the current Sprint Cup standings with a total of 397 points. Busch has never won an All-Star race but he has come close a number of times with four finishes of sixth or better in his last five events.
