The Orioles scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning Monday, allowed Boston to get within 4-3, then put the game away four runs in the eighth. Baltimore won as a -140 favorite on the dime line and covered against the run line at a price of +135.
The Orioles opened this season by splitting four games at Toronto.
The Red Sox opened this season by losing three of four games at Texas, scoring a total of 11 runs.
Last year, Baltimore took the season series from Boston eight games to five.
Wednesday’s Pitching Match-Up
Eflin is making his second start of this season. Last Thursday, he held Toronto to two runs and two hits through six innings, with one walk and two strikeouts, in a 12-2 Baltimore victory.
Last year, pitching for Tampa and the Orioles, Eflin posted a 3.59 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP through 165 innings. The Rays and O’s combined to play 17-11 with Eflin.
In two starts against Boston last year, Eflin allowed four runs and 11 hits through 11 innings, with zero walks and 10 strikeouts. His teams won both those games.
Crochet is also making his second start of the season for his new team. Last Thursday, he held Texas to two runs and five hits through five innings, with two walks and four whiffs, in a 5-2 Red Sox victory.
Last year, pitching for that terrible White Sox team, Crochet posted a 3.58 ERA through 146 innings, with a 1.07 WHIP.
In his one career start against Baltimore, in May of last season, Crochet allowed two runs and three hits through six innings, with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Of course, the White Sox lost that game 4-1.
Splits With the Sticks
Boston is batting just .198 so far this season against right-handed pitching, with a .281 team OBP and a .313 team slugging percentage. Most notably, DH Devers is off to an historically bad start, with 15 strikeouts through his first 19 at-bats.
Baltimore is slashing .370/.486/.481 against left-handed pitching. But this line-up was already playing without SS Gunnar Henderson, and now OF Colton Cowser is out with a broken thumb.
The Bullpens
The Orioles bullpen has allowed six ER and 18 hits through 20 innings this season, with 11 walks against 25 strikeouts.
The Red Sox pen has allowed four ER and 11 hits through 16 innings, with two walks against 10 whiffs.
