Tuesday’s MLB betting odds opened St. Louis at around -140 over Oakland, with an over/under of nine runs. Early betting action then dipped that total to 8.5.
A’s vs. Cardinals Set-Up
Oakland just split four games at home with Tampa Bay over the weekend, losing Sunday’s series finale 8-2. The A’s then had Monday off.
Just before that Oakland swept three games from Baltimore. So the A’s are 5-2 over their last seven games. At 41-38 overall Oakland trails division-leading Houston by eight games in the AL West, but it’s also only 2.5 games behind Cleveland in the battle for the second American League wild-card spot.
St. Louis, meanwhile, just took two of three games at home from the Angels over the weekend, missing out on the sweep by losing Sunday 6-4. The Cardinals then also had Monday off.
Just before that St.Louis split four games with Miami, and just before that they took three of four from the Mets. So the Cardinals are 9-5 over their last 14 games. At 40-37 overall St. Louis trails the first-place Cubs by 2.5 games in the NL Central, and they’re just a half-game behind Colorado in the battle for the second National League wild-card spot.
These two teams last met back in 2016, when the A’s took two of three games in St. Louis.
Tuesday’s Starting Arms
Flaherty, by our stringent standards, is 5/15 on quality starts this season and one for his last four. Last Tuesday he held the Marlins to three runs and four hits through seven innings, although the Cardinals lost that game 6-0. And over his last three starts, he’s allowed 11 runs and 15 hits, including four home runs, through 16 innings.
St. Louis is 7-8 with Flaherty this season, 1-2 over his last three starts.
This will be Flaherty’s first-ever start against Oakland.
Bassitt is only 3/11 on quality starts this year and 0 for his last six. Last Wednesday he held the Orioles to two runs and two hits through 5 2/3 innings of an 8-3 A’s victory. But over his last six starts, he’s allowed 19 earned runs and 27 hits through 31 2/3 innings.
Oakland is 5-6 with Bassitt this season, 1-3 over his last four starts.
This will be Bassitt’s first-ever start against the Cardinals.
