Sunday’s MLB betting odds opened Milwaukee at around -145 over Arizona, with an over/under of nine runs. Early betting action then bumped that line to about -150.
Brewers vs. Diamondbacks Set-Up
Milwaukee won the opener of this series Thursday night 5-1; Arizona then took Friday night’s game 10-7; the Brewers then rallied late to take Saturday’s contest 8-3.
Milwaukee won as a -100 “underdog” Thursday night; the Diamondbacks then cashed in as +120 home dogs Friday night, and the Brewers then hit the pay window at a price of +140 Saturday against Zack Greinke.
With Saturday’s victory, Milwaukee is 4-1 over its last five games. At 52-48 overall the Brewers trail the first-place Cubs by three games in the NL Central, but they also now lead St. Louis and Philadelphia by a half-game each in the battle for the second National League wild-card spot.
With Saturday’s loss, Arizona is 3-4 over its last seven games. At 50-49 overall the Diamondbacks trail the division-leading Dodgers by 15 games in the NL West but they’re also just a game and a half behind Milwaukee in that NL wild-card race.
This series is the first meeting between these teams this season. Last year the Brewers took the season series from the Diamondbacks five games to one.
Sunday’s Starting Arms
Rookie lefty Young is 1/3 on quality starts this season but only five outs away from being 3/3. Tuesday he held Texas to one run and three hits through 5 1/3 innings of a 9-2 Arizona win. And over his four ML appearances, he’s allowed just two runs and six hits through 18 2/3 innings, with 13 strikeouts against only three walks.
The Diamondbacks are 3-0 when Young starts this season.
This start will be Young’s first-ever against Milwaukee, which could give him an edge, at least for the first couple of times through the lineup.
Woodruff, by our stringent standards, is 9/19 on quality starts this year, working on a run of four in a row. Tuesday he held Atlanta to one run and five hits through 6 2/3 innings of a 13-1 Brewers victory. And over his last three starts, he’s allowed just six runs and 25 hits through 27 1/3 innings.
Milwaukee is a shiny 15-4 with Woodruff this season, 3-1 over his last four starts.
In his only career start against the Diamondbacks, back in May of last season, Woodruff allowed two runs on one hit and four walks through five innings of an 8-2 Brewers win.
