Mets vs. Yankees Analysis & Moneyline Pick

By Darin Zank

After taking the opener of this two-game Subway Series at Yankee Stadium Monday night, the Yankees shoot for the sweep when the teams meet again Tuesday night. Newcomer Frankie Montas, a disappointment so far for his new team, hits the hill for the home team here against
Taijuan Walker for the visitors.

Here’s how we homeworked this game for our free baseball betting pick.

MLB Betting Odds

Tuesday’s baseball betting lines opened the Yankees at around -124 over the Mets, with an over/under of 8.5 runs.

Mets-Yankees MLB Betting Preview

The Yankees grabbed the first game of this series Monday night, 4-2. The Pinstripes scored all four of their runs off Mets starter Max Scherzer while getting a quality outing from starter Domingo German on their way to victory.

The Yanks won as +140 underdogs Monday night and the game played under a total of 7.5 runs.

With Monday’s win, the Yankees are 4-6 over their last ten games, although they’ve been struggling for longer than that. At 75-48 overall, the Yanks’ lead in the AL East still sits at a comfortable eight games over second-place Tampa Bay, but they also now trail Houston by three games in the battle for the best record in the American League.

With Monday’s loss, the Mets are 4-3 over their last seven games. At 79-45, they lead second-place Atlanta by three games in the NL East.

This series is the second meeting between these teams this season; back a month ago, the Mets swept two games from the Yanks at Citi Field.

Tuesday’s Pitching Match-Up

Montas is 10/22 on quality starts this season but 0 for three for his new team. Last Thursday, he got touched by Toronto for six runs and eight hits through six innings of a 9-2 New York loss. And over his three starts for the Yankees, he’s allowed 14 runs and 18 hits through 14 innings.

Oakland, a team that’s 33 games under .500 this season, played 5-14 with Montas this year, but that was as much as six or seven games worse than they should’ve been, based on his performances. But New York is 0-3 with him, and he can take a good part of the blame for that.

This will be Montas’ first career start against the Mets.

Walker is 9/21 on quality starts this season. Last time out, one week ago against Atlanta, Walker tossed two scoreless innings, then left the game with a sore back. He then had his next start pushed back a couple of days. So he may be on a short leash Tuesday night.

The Mets are 12-9 with Walker this season, and that’s probably a game worse than they should be, based on his performances.

Over his last three starts against the Yankees, two last year and one earlier this season, Walker allowed ten runs and 15 hits, including six home runs, through 17 2/3 innings. The Mets won two of those three games, and all three games played over on the totals.

Splits With the Sticks

The Mets are batting an ML-best .266 against right-handed pitching this season, with a .334 team OBP and a .422 team slugging percentage. Numbers like those lead us to rank this line-up among the top three in Baseball in this split.

The Yankees are slashing .238/.323/.419 against right-handed pitching. The Yanks have also scored a total of 24 runs over their last ten games, and eight of those came in one game!

The Bullpens

The Yankees bullpen owns an ML-best 3.00 ERA this season, along with a 1.15 WHIP.

The Mets pen owns a 3.65 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.

MLB Betting Trends

The Mets are 39-26 on the road this season and 55-27 against right-handed starters.

The Yankees are 44-20 at home and 52-36 against right-handed starters.

Totals Report

  • The Over is 62-54 in Mets games this season.
  • The Under is 61-58 in Yankees games.
  • The totals are split 31-31 at Yankee Stadium this season.
  • This season, the Under is a combined 26-15 with Montas and Walker.

Mets vs. Yankees Betting Predictions 8/23/22

We give Walker, perhaps refreshed after ten days off, the edge in the pitching match-up here, and while the Yankees own an edge in the bullpen comparison, the Mets own an edge with the sticks. Also, the Mets are just going better than the Yanks as of late, they own a great record against RH starters, and they’re getting an underdog price. We’re betting the Mets Tuesday night.
