With Tuesday’s loss, Los Angeles is 3-10 over its last 13 games. At 27-23 overall, the Angels owns the third and final AL wild-card spot, two games clear of fourth-place Texas.
This series is the first meeting between these two teams this season. Last year Los Angeles took the season series from New York four games to three.
Wednesday’s Pitching Match-Up
Cortes is 4/9 on quality starts this season and three for his last four. Last Thursday, he held Tampa to one run and four hits through eight innings of a 7-2 New York victory. And over his last four starts, he’s allowed just five runs and 14 hits through 28 1/3 innings, with five walks against 30 strikeouts.
The Yankees are 7-2 with Cortes this season, 4-0 over his last four times out.
Over two relief appearances against the Angels last year, Cortes tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, with zero walks and four whiffs.
Detmers is just 1/8 on quality starts this year and 0/2 since throwing a no-hitter against the Rays three weeks ago. Last Wednesday, he got touched by Texas for five runs and two home runs through six innings of a 7-2 Los Angeles loss. And just before that, he gave up three runs and two homers through just 3 2/3 innings of a 10-5 loss to those same Rangers.
The Angels are 4-4 with Detmers this year, and that’s probably a game better than it should be.
This will be Detmers’ first career action against the Yankees.
