Giants-Yankees Betting Preview
San Francisco just dropped two of three games at home to Cincinnati earlier this week, avoiding the sweep by winning Wednesday’s series finale 8-6 in extra innings. The Giants then had Thursday off to travel.
San Francisco opened this season with three straight series victories over the Reds, Houston, and Seattle. So far, they’ve done it mainly with good pitching and holding opponents to three runs or less eight times out of 12 games.
Meanwhile, New York just dropped two of three games in Detroit, avoiding the sweep by winning Wednesday’s series finale 4-3. The Yankees then also had Thursday off.
New York opened this season with a rousing three-game sweep of Milwaukee, then lost two of three to Arizona. The Yanks then took two of them from Pittsburgh and lost that series to the Tigers.
Also, after starting with all those home runs with the new bats, the Yankees have scored a total of 10 runs over their last four games.
These teams met once last season, a three-game Yankees sweep of the Giants in San Francisco in June. Stroman picked up the W in one of those games.
Friday’s Pitching Match-Up
Stroman is 0/2 on quality starts this season. First, he gave up three runs in less than four inning against the Brewers, although New York won that game anyway 12-3. Then last Saturday he allowed four runs in four innings against the Pirates, although the Yanks won that game 10-4.
So New York is 2-0 with Stroman this season, although he didn’t have much to do with that. Also, the overs are 2-0 with Stroman.
In his one start last season against San Francisco, Stroman allowed one ER and five hits through 7 1/3 innings of a 6-2 Yankees win.
Ray is 1/2 on quality starts this year. First, he allowed three runs through 5 1/3 innings of a 6-3 Giants victory over Cincinnati. Then, last Saturday, he held the Mariners to one run and four hits through six frames of a 4-1 San Francisco win.
So the Giants are 2-0 with Ray, the totals 1-1.
This will be Ray’s first start against the Yankees since 2022, which is already a long time ago.
Splits With the Sticks
Last year, we ranked San Francisco in the bottom quarter of the Majors against right-handed pitching. This year, the Giants are batting .231 against RH pitching, with a .295 team OBP and a .406 team slugging percentage.
New York is slashing .282/.357/.554 against left-handed pitching this season.
The Bullpens
The Yankees bullpen has allowed 20 ER and 29 hits through 45 innings this season, with 24 walks against 60 strikeouts. In particular, new closer Devin Williams has allowed runs in three of his four outings.
The Giants pen has allowed just nine ER and 34 hits through 45 innings, with 17 walks against 41 whiffs.
MLB Betting Trends
San Francisco played 61-57 against RH starters last year, and it’s 8-1 vs. righties this season.
New York played just 21-23 against LH starters last year, and it’s 2-2 against lefties this season.
Totals Report
The overs are a combined 14-9 in Giants and Yankees games this season.
The overs are 4-2 at Yankee Stadium this season.
We give San Francisco the edge in the pitching match-up and in the bullpen comparison, while New York owns an edge with the sticks. Also, the Giants own a nice recent record against RH starters while the Yanks are a little iffy vs. lefties. Plus, San Francisco’s catching the underdog price. We’re betting the value with the Giants Friday night.
