The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead on the first pitch of the game, added three more on another first-inning home run, and rolled on from there, mashing out 19 hits on the night, including four homers. Boston won Tuesday as a +135 underdog on the dime line and the game roared over a total of seven runs. With Tuesday’s win the Red Sox own a six-game winning streak. At 20-22 overall Boston trails the first-place Yankees by 9.5 games in the AL East. With Tuesday’s loss Chicago is 3-4 over its last seven games. At 21-21 overall the White Sox trail first-place Minnesota by 5.5 games in the AL Central. This series is the second meeting between these teams this season. Earlier this month Chicago swept three low-scoring games at Fenway Park.
Wednesday’s Pitching Match-Up
Giolito, by our strict standards, is just 1/6 on quality starts this season, although he’s been pretty good his last couple times out. Last Wednesday he held Kansas City to two runs and seven hits through five innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts, although Chicago lost that game 6-2. And just before that he held Cleveland to one run through seven frames of a 4-1 White Sox victory. Chicago is only 2-4 with Giolito this season but that’s not his fault. In his one start last year against Boston Giolito got bombed for eight runs – seven earned – and two home runs through just one inning of work in an 11-4 White Sox loss. Hill is 1/7 on quality starts this year, pitching on a short leash. Last Thursday he gave up four runs and six hits through just two innings against Seattle, although the Red Sox won that game anyway 12-6. But over his four starts previous to that he allowed just three runs – two earned – and 13 hits through 19 innings. Boston is 4-3 with Hill this season and should probably be a game better. Hill’s last start against the White Sox came back in 2020 when as a Twin he gave up two runs through 3 1/3 innings of an 8-5 Minnesota loss.
Splits With the Sticks
Boston is batting .254 against right-handed pitching this season, with a .306 team OBP and a .418 team slugging percentage. The Red Sox have also scored at least six runs each of their last five games. Chicago is slashing .264/.330/.431 against left-handed pitching. The White Sox have also been held to three runs or less six times over their last 10 games, and they’ll be without OF Luis Robert, who’s on the virus list.
