Home runs are the main attraction for season-long MLB props for sluggers. The aces of each team’s starting rotation attract quite a bit of betting attention when it comes to the MLB betting prop to win a Cy Young Award as the ‘best of the best.
The annual Cy Young Award is broken down into the top starting pitcher from the American League and the National League. The corresponding prop bet odds to win follow suit. BetOnline has recently updated its betting odds for each league ahead of the 2021 MLB Opening Day festivities planned for Thursday, April 1.
American League 2021 Cy Young Betting Odds
Gerrit Cole is at the top of this list as a +400 favorite. The New York Yankees’ ace appears to once again be the class of the AL with the regular season schedule returning to the full 162 games.
Over the course of his eight-year career in the Majors, the right-hander won 19 games with Pittsburgh in 2015 and 20 games with the Houston Astros in the 2019 season. Through 12 starts last year in his first season with the Yankees, Cole went 7-3 with a 2.84 ERA. His career ERA stands at 3.19 with a 1.12 WHIP.
The value in these betting odds is heavily tied to New York being the favorite to win the AL Pennant this season. We have yet to see what Cole can do with the Yankees over the course of a full season. Second on the betting board to win the 2021 AL Cy Young is Lucas Giolito at +425 odds. Last year’s AL Cy Young winner, Shane Bieber rounds out the top three at +600.
If you are looking to add a live longshot to this list, Kenta Maeda is attracting some betting attention at +2000. Other notables include Corey Kluber (+1200), Lance Lynn (+1200) and Dallas Keuchel (+2500).
2021 AL Cy Young Free Pick: Gerrit Cole +400
National League 2021 Cy Young Betting Odds
Looking at the posted odds for the NL Cy Young, this season’s honors appear to be Jacob deGrom’s to lose as a +300 favorite. The New York Mets’ ace is one of the main reasons why his team is expected to be in the thick of the NL East Division title race in 2021.
The right-hander made 12 starts in last year’s shortened 60-game schedule. He went 4-2 with a solid 2.38 ERA. He has spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Mets to produce a career 2.61 ERA over 183 starts. His best effort was in 2017 with 15 wins in 31 starts. New York has gone out of its way to improve its roster across the board. This provides some upside potential to deGrom’s overall performance in 2021.
The odds jump to +900 for the next two pitchers on the list. Trevor Bauer is looking to repeat as last year’s NL Cy Young winner pitching for the Cincinnati Reds. The other ace is Yu Darvish as an added member of the San Diego Padres’ starting rotation. Each of these starters do offer some solid value at more favorable odds. Yet, Darvish pitching for San Diego this season has really caught my eye.
Rounding out the top five pitchers on the betting board are Max Scherzer (+1100) and Walker Buehler (+1200). You can also add Blake Snell at +1200 odds to the short list. The betting odds that Los Angeles Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw wins the 2021 NL Cy Young are +1600. 2021 NL Cy Young Free Pick: Yu Darvish +900
