After splitting the first two games of this series the Phillies and Diamondbacks meet for a rubber match Wednesday evening in Philly. Which way are we going here for our free MLB pick?
MLB Betting Odds
Wednesday’s MLB betting odds opened Philadelphia at around -145 over Arizona, with an over/under of 9.5 runs. Early betting action then dipped that line down to -140.
Diamondbacks vs. Phillies Set-Up
Arizona took the opener of this series Monday night 13-8, but Philly grabbed Tuesday night’s contest 7-4. The Diamondbacks cashed in as +120 underdogs on the MLB betting line Monday, while the Phillies won as -140 favorites Tuesday.
Also, Monday’s game flew over a total of 10 and Tuesday’s game played over a total of nine.
Tuesday’s loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the D’Backs. At 35-33 overall Arizona trails the division-leading Dodgers by 10 games in the NL West, but it’s also just three games back of the Cubs in the battle for the second National League wild-card spot.
With Tuesday’s victory, Philly is 5-2 over its last seven games. At 38-29 overall Philadelphia is tied with Atlanta for the lead in the NL East.
This series is the first meeting between these teams this season. Last year the D’Backs took the season series from the Phillies four games to two.
Wednesday’s Starting Arms
Eflin is 7/12 on quality starts this season and two for his last three. Last Friday he held Cincinnati to two runs – one earned – and four hits through 6 1/3 innings of a 4-2 Philly victory. And over his last three starts, he’s allowed five ER and 16 hits through 16 innings.
The Phillies are 6-6 with Eflin this season, but only 1-3 over his last three starts, although that’s not all his fault.
This will be Eflin’s first start against Arizona since 2016, and that’s already a long time ago.
Kelly, by our stringent standards, is only 5/13 on quality starts this season but two for his last two. Last Friday he held Toronto to one run and three hits through seven innings of an 8-2 Diamondbacks win. And 10 days ago he held the Mets to one run and six hits, with 10 strikeouts, through 7 2/3 innings of a 7-1 Arizona victory.
The D’Backs are 6-7 with Kelly this season, 2-0 over his last two starts.
This will be Kelly’s first-ever start against Philadelphia.
Wednesday’s Batting Splits
Arizona, which has hit nine home runs in this series so far, is batting .240/.311/.421 against right-handed pitching this season.
Philadelphia, which has hit six homers in this series, is batting .241/.322/.417 against RH pitching this season.
The Bullpens
The Diamondbacks bullpen owns a 4.20 ERA this season and a 1.38 WHIP.
The Phillies pen owns a 4.25 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
